the idea

a mobile app for busy voters

Ballot gives you the digital tools you need to be an informed and engaged citizen. Using just your address, Ballot provides you with upcoming election information: date(s), polling location, and the candidates on your personal ballot. You can review your options, visit candidate profiles, and save your selections.

the problem

democracy requires participation

Only 58% of eligible voters participated in the 2016 presidential elections. In the 2014 mid-term elections, voter turnout was the lowest it has been in 70 years, just 36.4%. When it comes to local elections, the data is worse. Voter participation in local elections for many U.S. cities is now below 20%.

the prototype

build voter confidence

In April 2015, we received a grant from the Prototype Fund of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to build a prototype of Ballot. The prototype team conducted focus groups and interviews of voters, candidates, and political advisers to determine the initial set of features: user sign-up, candidate listing, candidate profiles, matching quiz, and upcoming election information.

join the cause

Our team is committed to creating a beautifully designed, trustworthy and functional product that facilitates and encourages civic participation. There are a lot of ways to fund good ideas, and we are well aware of the influence of money in politics. Like any other startup, we answer to the people who support us. Because of this, we are inviting you to be a part of what's next for Ballot.

Privacy Policy

This privacy policy (“Policy”) is effective as of July 1, 2015. The latest update to this Policy is July 21, 2018.

This Policy describes the information Ballot (“we,” “us” or “Ballot”) collects from you via our website or applications, and how we use and share such information. This Policy does not govern how information is used by parties that we do not control or by individuals who we do not employ. If you visit a website or app that we mention or link to, be sure to review their privacy policy.

Personally Identifiable Information

There are limited pieces of information in this Policy that we collect from you that is “Personally Identifiable Information,” or “PII”. These include, but are not limited to, your name, home address, your email address, your telephone numbers, your picture if you upload it directly to Ballot, your unique mobile device ID number, and your social media account IDs. We take our collection of PII and your privacy expectations very seriously, and therefore have very restricted rules for handling, using and sharing this information, as described in this Policy. It is up to you whether to disclose PII to us, although if you do not do so, certain products and services may not be available for your use. Ballot maintains full rights to any information collected via our website or applications, and may freely collect, use and disclose such information unless prohibited by this Privacy Policy or applicable law.

Your views and affiliations

In addition to PII, there is other information that you may share through Ballot that we consider sensitive, and to which we apply strict rules. While this information cannot be used to identify you personally, it does provide insights about the views of people who use Ballot. We refer to this information in this Policy as “Your Views” and includes but is not limited to, your stated political party affiliation and the issues you vote on via our website or applications. Your Views do not include any information that you post publicly or share through your social networks or through message exchanges with other users. Because Ballot does not collect such information directly from you and because, once posted, such information may be immediately accessible by parties that we do not manage, Ballot cannot control such information in the way we control information provided to us, which we describe as Your Views in this Policy.

Anonymous Information

We also collect information about the use of the Ballot website and applications which does not reveal your identity. This information includes, but is not limited to, browser and device information, information collected through cookies, pixel tags, and other technologies, and demographic information and other non-identifying information provided by you (such as a zip code or general geographic area).

How we may use your information

There are multiple ways we use your information to provide the best service possible to you. In doing so, we may use your PII and Your Views to draw your attention to issues in which we believe you may be interested, and to communicate directly with you through email, via our apps, or in your usage of our services. Here are some examples of the ways we might use your information:

  • We use your information to respond to your inquiries and fulfill your requests, such as showing you the candidates on your upcoming election ballot or your assigned voting poll location.

  • We use your information to communicate directly to and provide you information regarding our services and changes to our terms, conditions, and policies.

  • We use your information for data analysis, developing new services, enhancing, improving or modifying our website and applications, identifying usage trends, and determining the effectiveness of our services.

  • We use your information to personalize your experience by presenting relevant voting information tailored to you based on what we know about you. We may also send you promotional communications that we believe may be of interest to you.

  • We use your information to facilitate social sharing functionality, such as sharing content and voting information through the Ballot website and application, as well as other social media platforms such as, but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

  • We use your account information to allow you to send email messages to your email contacts through our platform, such as to share voting information.

  • We use information about your computer or device to ensure that our site, apps and APIs function properly and are optimized for your computer or device.

  • If you are using one of our mobile applications, we use your device ID to recognize you when you use the application and to store your preferences and settings.

  • We use cookies, pixel tags and other tracking technologies to measure and improve our services and develop features and functionalities on our sites, apps and APIs. For example, if we see that people are using a certain device use the platform the most, we might decide to build our tailor our services specifically for that device.

  • We use IP Addresses for administration and security purposes, such as calculating usage levels of our sites, apps and API, helping diagnose server problems and detecting fraud and spam behavior.

  • We may use and share aggregated and anonymized information to better understand and serve our users or for optimization of our marketing and ad targeting efforts. For example, we may compile statistics about the percentage of our users in a state or county who care about animal rights, or the age range of those users.

Who may receive your PII and Your Views

The Ballot community

Your username, general geographic location (such as city, state, country), and a link to your Ballot user profile may be displayed on your profile page, on contributions you make and on related areas. This information will be viewable to any user of Ballot, including the media, search engines, and other organizations that access Ballot. If you do not wish to have your personal information displayed, you may choose not to reveal your name on your profile page by selecting a username other than your name. Our platform provides an open forum for communication by users. We do not monitor, verify, or perform any background check on users.

Your other social media platforms

You may share your activities on Ballot with contacts on other social media sites. For example, you may share candidates you support via Facebook. To share via social networks, you must connect your Ballot account with your social media account. In such case, you authorize us to share information with your social media account provider, and you understand that the use of the information we share will be governed by the social media site’s privacy policy. If you do not want your information shared via these channel, please do not connect your social media account with your Ballot account and do not use the social sharing features on our platform.

You may voluntarily share information on message boards, chat, profile pages and blogs, and other services to which you are able to post information and materials (including the Ballot pages on Facebook and other social media platforms). We urge you to be very careful when deciding to disclose any information about yourself via the social sharing features of our platform.

Advertisers and ad networks

We may share information about you with advertisers and advertising networks on our platform, except that we will not provide PII to advertisers or ad networks. Also, advertising companies may place cookies on your browser. If you would like more information about this practice and to learn about your choices in connection with it, please visit

If you are using one of our mobile applications, our ad network partners may use and store your mobile device ID to show ads that they consider relevant to you in various mobile services that you use.

Organizations and Representatives

Ballot maintains pages for organizations and political representatives with which you can interact. If you interact directly with organizations and representatives on these pages and provide PII on their pages, only the representatives and organizations to whom you have provided PII via the Ballot platform will receive your PII. For instance, if you send a message to your city council representative when sharing your voting preference or advocating on issues, and include your email address and name, that information will be made available to your city council representative and only that city council representative. Ballot may also share Your Views with representatives and organizations, provided that we will never associate Your Views with PII when providing PII to representatives or organizations unless you specifically enable a specific interaction. We may share Your Views with representatives and organizations in a manner that does not identify you individually. For instance, we may share with candidate percentages of users who liked that candidate’s profile, but we will not include your PII in these instances or share your voting behavior in a way that can identify you as an individual.

Administrative purposes

We may share information about you with our services providers who process information to provide services to us or on your behalf. We have contracts with our service providers that prohibit them from sharing your information with anyone else or from using your information for any purposes other than providing contracted services.

We may disclose the personal information we collect about our users when we believe disclosure is necessary to investigate, prevent, or respond to suspected illegal or fraudulent activity or to protect the safety, rights, or property of Ballot, our users, or others.

If requested or required by government authorities, such as law enforcement authorities, courts, or regulators, or otherwise to comply with the law, we may have to disclose any information we have about our users. We also may disclose information collected about you in order to exercise or protect legal rights or defend against legal claims.

We have no plans to sell our business. In this unlikely event, we may transfer your personal information to a third party if we or any of our company affiliates are involved in a corporate restructuring (e.g., a sale, merger, or other transfer of assets).

Email settings

Ballot may use your PII to send you promotional communications. You have the opportunity to opt-out of receiving such promotional communications from us at any time.
